Indexing and abstracting services

Indexing services are databases which list details of journal articles, books, reports, and other materials, often in a specific subject area. Sometimes the full-text article is attached to the record via Article Linker. Abstracting services provide short summaries of works such as journal articles, books or dissertations. Many databases provide indexing and abstracting at the same time.

The following legend applies:

•  = this web service works in conjunction with Article Linker.
•  = networked CD-ROM, which can be accessed from any PC on campus. Study Bedroom users and staff with non-standard PCs will need to install a small piece of software first.
• All other services listed are web based.

	Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals	Architecture and design, history of architecture, city planning 1934-
	BIAB	British and Irish Archaeological Bibliography - 1695-
	Bibliography of British and Irish History (hosted by Brepolis)	An authoritative guide to what has been written about British and Irish history from the Roman period to the present day. This database will supersede the Royal Historical Society Bibliography; due to no longer being funded by Arts and Humanities Research Council it will also cease to be a free resource. From now on Brepolis will be the service provider. Provides bibliographic data on British and Irish history and relations with the Empire and the Commonwealth, from 55 BC to the present.

Who indexes this title?

When you find an article you are interested in you may want to identify a service that indexes that title. The JISC ADAT service can do this (for up to 15 major services) although it was really designed to allow librarians/information specialists to compare two or more services in depth.
