Uglow Family HistoryWhere do you find us?

One certain fact is that in the early 16th century there were some of us (however the name is spelt) in the Stratton and Marhamchurch area of NE Cornwall. This is indicated by the Cornwall Military Survey dated 1522, 1525, 1543 and by the Church records of burials and baptisms at Marhamchurch in the mid-16 century. Here possibly three or more different families who were having children baptised and the earlier UGLOWs who are recorded on documents dated 1522, 1525 and 1543, were the subjects of burial records. Also, in no other parish in the UK are UGLOW records as early and numerous as these at Marhamchurch, Cornwall. The earliest reference that I personally have found is a J. Uglow who is recorded as the composer of a tune "St.Vincent" published in 1508 - but it is much more probable that this refers to James 1813 who is a music teacher in Cheltenham in the 19th century. The modern distribution in the UK can be researched though the on-line BT phone book - useful to show settlement patterns. I've found 120+ subscribers in the UK, predominantly clustered in Cornwall and Devon but with noticeable hotspots in the north west around Manchester and Liverpool, Surrey and Peterborough - and not forgetting a couple still in Swansea.
