Critical perspectives research led teaching

Medical Law and Ethics LLM

Why study Medical Law and Ethics?

Medical Law and Ethics is a new and expanding field which offers considerable scope for interdisciplinary study and collaboration. The responsibilities of those providing health care and the expectations of those receiving it are legally defined, and as a consequence the law is increasingly involved in dispute resolution.

The programme offers a comprehensive examination of the role of law within the contemporary healthcare environment. It provides a sound knowledge and understanding of the institutions and organisations associated with medical law and the interrelationships between them. It explores the practical contexts within which medical law operates in order to develop an understanding of the theoretical and ethical perspectives which underpin it. Current and developing issues will be studied using an interdisciplinary and interactive approach which draws upon students’ participation and experience.

The LLM attracts students from a wide range of professional and academic backgrounds including medicine, law and nursing. A foundation module introduces students who are new to the study of law to the key principles and institutions associated with the legal system alongside the core medico-legal concepts and research methods.

Graduates in recent years from the LLM in Medical Law and Ethics programme have pursued a variety occupations, including specialisation in the practice of medical law, employment in the office of the Health Service commissioner, and the furthering of their medical careers with the National Health Service.
