Critical perspectives research led teaching

International Commercial Law LLM

Why study International Commercial Law?

Kent Law School has been running an LLM in International Commercial Law since the early 1980s. The programme has a longstanding reputation for excellence in this area. The large number of modules that are available cover a diversity of subjects within the general field. The programme as a whole covers the core legal areas involved in the conduct and regulation of international commercial transactions and transnational enterprise activities in the context of national and international regulation.

Teaching is provided by academic staff who are distinguished in their subject areas. In each area the focus is placed upon the combination of knowledge of legal instruments with reflective evaluation of the practical operation and effectiveness of the law. Emphasis is also placed upon the interaction of law with other disciplines, particularly economics and politics.

This qualification in International Commercial Law is a means of entry into a range of occupations where specialist expertise is needed. The programme provides an ideal basis for those seeking to become international commercial law practitioners, or advisers to relevant national and international organisations. Equally, the programme provides a strong foundation for those seeking to follow research degrees in particular areas of International Commercial Law.

Programme Structure

For full-time students, study is divided between taught modules, which last for one term each, and dissertation work. A total of six modules must be taken over the first two terms. Supervised dissertation work, on a relevant agreed subject, is then undertaken during the remainder of the academic year.
