Kent Law School

Critical perspectives research led teaching

PhD Studentships and Bursaries 2012/2013

Kent Law School (KLS) invites applications for three types of funding for prospective postgraduate research students to commence in October 2012.

Kent Law School was ranked the 6th best law school in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. It enjoys a pluralistic intellectual environment for research, where both traditional and critical legal scholarship, theoretical and empirical work, and interdisciplinary studies all flourish. Research specialisations of our staff can be found at http://www.kent.ac.uk/law/people/staff/academic_index.html.

At present KLS has in excess of 50 postgraduate research students, comprising a lively and integrated postgraduate research community. Those appointed to research studentships are provided with shared computing facilities (IBM compatible personal computers using Word 2007), and shared office facilities. There is substantial annual funding available, within determined limits, for PhD students, including those without studentships, to attend conferences and present their research. Postgraduate students are provided with a common room and a facilitator to help them present, explore and develop their research ideas within a supportive community of their peers. There is also a compulsory research methods module that all students must attend together with an anchor workshop offered by the Graduate School as part of their Transferable Skills Programme. Many students also participate in regular reading groups.

Candidates can apply for more than one scholarship but must submit a separate KLS PG Funding Application Form for each funding application.

ESRC Scholarships

The University of Kent is proud to be part of the South-East ESRC Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) in partnership with the Universities of Reading, Royal Holloway and Surrey. This centre of excellence in social science postgraduate research training has studentships across the consortium for students commencing their studies in the 2012-13 academic year. There are no teaching obligations attached to this funding. For further details see the University of Kent’s ESRC webpage http://www.kent.ac.uk/scholarships/postgraduate/research_council/esrc.html

Eligibility Criteria

Studentships will be awarded on the basis of the academic excellence of the candidate and the research proposal.
Applicants should normally have obtained, or be about to obtain an undergraduate degree of at least Upper Second Class Honours level (2:1 or equivalent from other countries), or a postgraduate degree.

How to apply

Candidates must complete the South East DTC application pack available at http://www.kent.ac.uk/law/postgraduate/funding/DTCapplication.html and must apply for a place to study for a postgraduate degree at the University through the online process at http://records.kent.ac.uk/external/admissions/pg_application.php. Kent Law School Studentship

Applications are invited for full time research studentships leading to the degree of PhD commencing in September 2012. The funding for these studentships will be available for one year in the first instance, extended (for registered students only) for a second and then third year providing verifiable progress has been made (in teaching and research). Successful applicants for the studentships will receive a maintenance grant equivalent to that offered by ESRC (£13,590 in 2011/12) and tuition fees paid at the home/EU rate (£3,732 in 2011/12). Those awarded a studentship will normally be expected to teach a maximum of four hours per week in term time on an undergraduate law module, at the direction of the Head of School. Some bursaries (for example, reducing overseas fee to home fee rate) may also be available.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should normally have obtained, or be about to obtain an undergraduate degree of at least Upper Second Class Honours level (2:1 or equivalent from other countries), or a postgraduate degree.

It would be an advantage if applicants could demonstrate how their research will contribute to existing debates in their field, as well as how the candidate will contribute to our vibrant postgraduate community at KLS. It is expected that successful applicants will undertake research in areas of research strength of the department. We particularly welcome research proposals in socio-legal and critical legal studies – that is, applicants that demonstrate a capacity to reflect on the methodology of their research from a theoretically informed perspective.

How to Apply

Those wishing to apply for the Kent Law School Studentship must apply to study for a postgraduate degree electronically at http://records.kent.ac.uk/external/admissions/pg_application.php.
