Nick Jackson wins Alistair MacQueen Memorial Grant

Senior Lecturer Nick Jackson has won the Oxford University Press Alistair MacQueen Memorial Grant, receiving £1,000 for a project to enhance the relationship between the Kent Law Clinic and the Canterbury Housing Advice Centre.

The winner was announced at the Law Teacher of the Year award ceremony, part of the Learning in Law Academic Conference 2010 which took place on Friday 29th January.  Nick Jackson was one of six people shortlisted for the Law Teacher of the Year award, and although he didn’t win, Nick was delighted to receive the Grant which will provide funds to produce public information and student training videos in to enhance the working relationship between Canterbury Housing Advice Centre and the Kent Law Clinic.

The Canterbury Housing Advice Centre, of which Nick Jackson is Chair, is a registered charity providing free confidential, independent help and advice for Canterbury residents at risk of losing their homes or who are threatened with homelessness.  The Kent Law Clinic is a free legal advice service based at the University of Kent, staffed by qualified lawyers and by law students at the University.

The Housing Advice Centre and the Kent Law Clinic run a regular Mortgage Possession Desk at Canterbury County Court - a free service available to people facing mortgage repossession proceedings at the Court.  The Alistair MacQueen Memorial Grant will be used to involve students and staff in producing a series of videos to brief future student volunteers who will be assisting on the Possession Desk, and to raise public and student awareness of the services offered by the Centre and the Clinic and of housing problems in Canterbury.

Head of Kent Law School Joanne Conaghan congratulated Nick Jackson ‘This recognises the excellent and valuable work with which Nick is involved, and further demonstrates our commitment to using pro bono services to develop the legal knowledge of our students, and to foster a sense of public service by using this knowledge for the benefit of the local community.’
