The University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent, CT2 7NZ, T +44 (0)1227 764000
Founded at the inception of the University of Kent in the mid-1960s,
Kent is the UK's leading critical law school
In addition to learning the detail of the law, students at Kent are taught to think about its history, development and relationship with wider society. This approach allows students to fully understand the law, and enhances what is already a wonderfully exciting and deeply interesting subject. Our critical approach not only makes the study of law more interesting, it helps to develop crucial skills and abilities required for legal practice. More on our critical approach.
World Class Research...Inspiring Teaching
Kent was rated as the 6th best law school in the UK in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, and 4th by the quality of research considered 'World Class' or 'Internationally Excellent'. All academic staff teach at undergraduate level, with all students (undergraduate and postgraduate) taught by leading academic scholars. Students at Kent are taught in lectures and in small group seminars, with friendly and approachable teachers engaging and encouraging students. We are firmly committed to outstanding teaching, and inspire our students to excel academically and professionally.
The Kent Law Clinic
Our multiple award winning Law Clinic - the current holder of the Attorney General's Award for pro-bono work and Queen's Anniversary Prize recipient - allows students to critically analyse and understand the law by representing real clients under the supervision of qualified lawyers. Participation in the Clinic is voluntary but open to all students, with opportunities to work as part of the integrated Criminal Appeals Team and Immigration and Asylum Appeals Team also available. The Law Clinic offers undergraduate students a truly unique opportunity to learn through practice.
Employability and Student Activities
We prepare students for successful and rewarding careers. In addition to involvement in the Clinic, the Law School offers an active Mooting programme, with students participating in local, national and international moots. We regularly hold careers talks given by practising lawyers (many of whom are Kent alumni), hold guest lectures given by some of the leading legal figures of our time, and work with our student law societies to give students opportunities to meet and speak with prominent members of the legal profession. Kent graduates demand amongst the highest starting salaries in the UK, and our excellent international reputation means that our students proceed to practice in numerous countries worldwide.
International Perspectives...Global Opportunities
Studying at Kent is a truly international experience. Staff and Students from Kent come from around the world, with over 75 nationalities represented within the Law School. Our comparative curriculum is amongst the most international in the UK, and our qualifying law degrees offer the opportunity to spend a year studying in China, Hong Kong, Canada, or throughout much of Europe. Many of our LLM programmes have an international focus, and we offer three taught LLM programmes at the University's Brussels campus, with students able to study at both Brussels and Canterbury.
