Making connections/ Unlocking potential

Research Degrees

The Business School has recently made key appointments at senior academic level consolidating our international expertise in the following areas:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Industrial Relations
  • Management
  • Management Science
  • Marketing
  • Operational Research
MA, MPhil and PHd degrees are available in most of the above areas or in the general subject area of 'Management'.

Before submitting a research proposal, applicants are encouraged to contact academic staff on an individual basis for an informal discussion.

For more information, contact Claire Baldock, Research Secretary on PhDinfo@kent.ac.uk.

The diversity of staff interests offers a wide range of research opportunities for postgraduate students in the Business School. It is possible for research degrees to be undertaken on both a full and part time basis. Under acceptable circumstances, research studies may be pursued overseas. It is assumed that all registered students will undertake original research within their chosen topic and that the work completed will be of publishable standard either in the form of scholarly articles or academic books. All research students are allocated to supervisors with whom they are expected to have close intellectual relationships. They are expected to attend research seminars both within the Business School and the University. They are also strongly encouraged to attend relevant academic conferences and, in their final research year, to offer papers at these.

All newly registered students are expected to attend a research training programme.

This consists of:

  • a number of research methods courses run within the Social Science Faculty. The University of Kent is noted for the strength of its social science research, in general, and in specialist areas such as ethnographic research or econometrics
  • a structured programme of courses in both the basic theory of management and in specialist management topics related to your research.
  • a wide ranging programme of research seminars within the Social Science Faculty
  • supporting skills based courses in areas such as statistics, computing, electronic literature searching and languages.
