Employer Liaison Director
(Fixed-term until 31 July 2013)
Salary Range: £28,839 - £32,458
SEPnet is a consortium of six partner Physics Departments at the Universities of Kent, Queen Mary College, Royal Holloway, Southampton, Surrey and Sussex, working together with the common objective of advancing and protecting Physics as a strategically important subject in the UK. The consortium is governed by a board of senior representatives from the partner universities, with a part-time independent Chair, Professor, Sir William Wakeham and an Executive Director, Dr James West. The Chair will represent the consortium in dealing with HEFCE, Research Councils, education authorities and regional organisations such as SEEDA and GOSE at a strategic level and the Executive director will play a major part in implementing the agenda for the development of Physics in the six HEIs, in the region and nationally; liaise at national and international level with the principal stakeholders; and take the lead in allocating the consortium’s discretionary resources to achieve its goals.
Responsible to the Executive Director, you will actively engage with industry to develop closer links between Physics departments in the South East Physics Network and national and local employers of Physics graduates (both undergraduate and post graduate) with the aim of increasing the employability of physics graduates, and sustaining physics as a strategically important subject for the UK economy and its science base in the South East Region of England.
Essentially you will be educated to degree, HND or NVQ 4 level in a relevant specialist subject, plus several years relevant experience or significant vocational experience, demonstrating development though the acquisition of appropriate specialist knowledge and involvement in a series of progressively more demanding/relevant work/roles. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role, as the candidate will need to be confident in engaging with students, undertaking outreach work with employers, representing all Physics departments in the South East. Previous experience of many of the following: reporting to high level committees, public speaking, contributing to meetings, producing high level reports and web material, managing bursary schemes, collaborating between employers and university career services, event organisation, employment practices will be essential to the role. In addition you will have excellent organisational, research analytical, influencing, and negotiating, problem solving and decision-making skills.
Based at Southampton University, you will need to travel within the South East of England as a significant part of the job.
