How do I connect to eduroam at another university?

Check the university you are visiting is part of the eduroam network. See a list of participating eduroam organisations.

Visit the website of the university you are going to for details of the security and encryption types they use on their network. These may be different to our own and will need changing in your eduroam settings to match. In most cases you won't need to change anything, you should be able to connect with your existing settings.

I can't configure my wireless - GlobalSign Root CA is not listed

During the wireless configuration you must tick an option for GlobalSign Root CA. If you don't see this option listed then follow these instructions:

  1. Using a different internet connection on your computer, such as a wired connection or another wireless connection, download and save the certificate file from:
    https://www.kent.ac.uk/itservices/wireless/certificates/globalsignrootca.cer
  2. On your computer, double-click the file, then click install.
  3. Having installed the file, check that all the GlobalSign Root CA checkboxes are ticked within your wireless connection properties (as described in the instructions for your operating system in the Wireless Access at Kent setup guide).

If you are unable to use your own computer to obtain the certificate, use another computer such as a student PC in the library to download and save the certifcate to a USB drive. You can then transfer the certificate to your own computer and install it following the instructions in step 2 above.

Why can I no longer connect to the wireless service?

If you did not reconfigure your wireless settings at the end of the summer term 2011 you will need to do it now:

If you are still having trouble connecting, check to see if you can still access other services. If you have trouble accessing other services, you may need to change your password. Ask for help

I can't get a Wireless signal in my Study Bedroom

Only rooms in Beverley farmhouse and the kitchen areas of Darwin college are covered by the Wireless Service. No other Study Bedroom areas are covered. Students should use the network socket in their room to connect to the network instead.

The wireless networks tab is not present or is greyed out.

This is caused by the wireless adapters own configuration software taking control of the wireless adapters configuration.
To solve this problem open up the wireless adapters configuration program and set the option to let Windows configure the wireless adapter. In some cases the windows configuration software is referred to as Zero Configuration Utility.

I can't see any wireless networks or I can't connect to any wireless networks.

Make sure you are in a wireless zone. There are wireless zones in the Tonbridge Centre and social and teaching areas at the Canterbury and Medway campuses.

Check that the wireless adapter is turned on. It can be turned on either by a slider on the top or side of a laptop, or via a function key on the keyboard. Check the manual for instructions.

Poor wireless signal issues

If you get a poor signal in some locations, this may due to the structure of the building.

What you can access when connected to Kent's Wireless Service

Some services are restricted to members of the University - visitors should check with their conference/course organiser what they can access.

Other connections don't work after running auto-setup on a computer with a wireless card

The auto-setup tool sets your computer to use a Windows utility to configure wireless. This may break existing (non-University) connections that were configured with a wireless card manufacturer's utility on older computers (that use a wireless card).

If your computer has a wireless card, and uses the manufacturer's utility to configure connections, you can either:

  1. Run the auto-setup tool, and then recreate any non-University connections using the Windows utility (recommended).
  2. Or, not run the auto-setup tool and setup your University connection following your wireless card manufacturer's instructions (using the wireless settings detailed in the 'Wireless access at Kent' guide).
  3. Alternatively you can run the auto-setup tool and then manually switch between utilities every time you switch between University/non-University connections.
