WiFi for laptops/PCs

Before you get here

Make your PC/laptop University WiFi ready from home so that you can get online as soon as you arrive on campus - follow the setup process below.

Picking up the WiFi signal

To connect you need to configure your PC/laptop and then be in range of the University WiFi signal eduroam. Most learning and social areas on campus at Canterbury, Medway and Tonbridge, and Canterbury bedrooms are covered.

Before connecting

Your PC needs protection from viruses including updates for your operating system: Windows 8, 7, Vista or XP, Mac OS 10.6+, or common Linux distributions should work (we cannot provide user support for Linux).

Setup instructions

Logging in

When setting up WiFi, add @kent.ac.uk to your username

Eg: user abc1 enters abc1@kent.ac.uk (eduroam visitors: use your own user details).

Windows 8

Automatic setup tool for Kent WiFi (eduroam)

Run the auto-setup tool

If you are not within range of the Kent WiFi signal you can ignore the error message, the setup process should still have worked.

If the setup tool doesn't work, try the manual setup:

  1. From the new Metro Start screen press Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the wireless icon (bottom right of the desktop) and select Open Network and Sharing Centre.
  3. Select Setup a new connection or network.
  4. Select Manually connect to a wireless network and click Next.
  5. Enter the following details:

    Network name: eduroam
    Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    Encryption type: AES

  6. Click Next then click Change connection settings
  7. Select the Security tab then click Settings.
  8. Tick the box labelled Connect to these servers and type radius.ad.kent.ac.uk;radius2.ad.kent.ac.uk in the box below.
  9. In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities window tick GlobalSign Root CA. Click OK then click Advanced Settings
  10. Tick Specify authentication mode and select User authentication.
  11. Click OK/Close as prompted. You are now ready to connect.

To connect:

  1. Click the wireless signal icon (bottom right of the desktop).
  2. Select eduroam and press Connect.
  3. To log in, enter your Kent IT account username with @kent.ac.uk appended (eduroam visitors use your home institution user details).

Windows 7/Vista

Run the auto-setup tool

If you are not within range of the Kent WiFi signal you can ignore the error message, the setup process should still have worked.

If the setup tool doesn't work, try the manual setup:

  1. Click Start, Control Panel, then Network and Internet: if it's not there, click Control Panel Home (left menu) and/or Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Under Network and Sharing Center click Manage Wireless Networks
  3. Click the Add button, click Manually create a network profile (on the left) and enter the text/settings as appropriate:

    - Network name: eduroam
    - Security type: select WPA2-Enterprise
    - Encryption type: AES
    - tick the Start this connection automatically box
    - all other settings should be ok. Click Next.

  4. Click Change connection settings:

    - tick the Connect automatically when this network is in range box
    - untick the Connect to a more preferred network if available box
    - untick the Connect even if the network is not broadcasting box.

  5. Click the Security tab and select these settings:

    - Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    - Encryption type: AES
    - Choose a network authentication method: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    - Windows 7: untick the box Remember my credentials for this connection each time I’m logged on.
    - Vista: untick the box Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network.

  6. Click the Settings button:

    - tick the Validate server certificate box
    - tick Connect to these servers and in the box below type:

    radius.ad.kent.ac.uk;radius2.ad.kent.ac.uk

    - scroll down the Trusted Root Certification Authorities list, and tick GlobalSign Root CA. If there is more than one, eg GlobalSign Root CA 2010 and GlobalSign Root CA 2014, tick them all. If you don’t see GlobalSign Root CA in the list contact an IS support desk for advice.

  7. Click Configure… and untick Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any).

    - Windows 7: click Ok/Close to finish, and click the popup (bottom right of your screen): Additional information is required to connect...

    - Vista: click OK to return to the Manually connect to a wireless network box, click Connect to... and click eduroam from the list, then Connect. Then click Enter/select additional logon information.

  8. To log in, enter your IT account username with @kent.ac.uk appended (eg, abc1@kent.ac.uk). Eduroam visitors: use your home login details.
  9. If asked to choose a Work, Home or Public network, select Work.

Next time you connect: if you see Additional information is required to connect... click the message to log in.

Windows XP

Click Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, then right click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties:

  • If you see a Wireless Networks tab, run the auto-setup tool or configure your settings manually following the instructions below.
  • Can't see a Wireless Networks tab? Contact Helpdesk (do not run the tool).

Manual setup instructions for XP

  1. Click Start > Control Panel (or Start > Settings > Control Panel). Then open Network Connections.
  2. Right-click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
  3. Click the Wireless Networks tab, then Add
  4. In the Wireless Network Properties window:
    - type eduroam in the Network name (SSID) field
    - select WPA2 in the Network Authentication field
    - select AES in the Data encryption field.
  5. Click the Authentication tab:
    - tick Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network (if not already ticked)
    - EAP type: change to Protected EAP (PEAP)
    - untick Authenticate as computer and Authenticate as guest, then click Properties.
  6. Click the Settings button:
    - tick the Validate server certificate box, tick Connect to these servers and in the box below, type
    radius.ad.kent.ac.uk;radius2.ad.kent.ac.uk
    - scroll down the Trusted Root Certification Authorities list and tick the GlobalSign Root CA box(es). If you don’t see this, contact us for advice.
  7. Choose Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAPv2) from the Select Authentication Method drop-down list, and click Configure.
  8. In the next window, untick Automatically use my Windows logon name and click OK a few times until you see to the Wireless Networks tab.
  9. Ensure eduroam is at the top of the Preferred networks box; if not select it and click Move up.
  10. Click the Advanced button (bottom right). Tick Access point (infrastructure) networks only.
  11. Click OK then the speech bubble (bottom-right of the screen) to log in:
    - enter your Kent IT account username with @kent.ac.uk appended (eduroam visitors use your home institution user details).
    - enter your password, ignore logon domain and click OK.

Mac 10.6 and above

  1. Open the AirPort menu and select eduroam. If not listed, click Join other network, type eduroam as the network name, and select WPA2 Enterprise in the Security field.
  2. To log in, enter your Kent IT account username with @kent.ac.uk appended (eduroam visitors use your home institution user details).
  3. If asked to accept a GlobalSign Root CA certificate, check that radius.ad.kent.ac.uk or radius2.ad.kent.ac.uk is listed, then accept it.
  4. If auto-setup doesn't work, use the Airport menu to turn the Airport off and on again.
