Before connecting your own computer to the Kent network you must protect it from viruses and other threats. Campus student PCs and Staff Managed Desktops are automatically protected.

Update your operating system

Updating the operating system keeps your computer secure and improves performance.

Mac users

Windows users

Configure Windows to check for updates automatically

Enable Automatic Updates to make sure your Windows system is always up-to-date:

  1. Click Start / Windows Orb, Control Panel.
  2. Click Automatic Updates (or Windows Updates in Windows 7 and Vista) and follow on-screen instructions.
Alternatively, check for updates manually
  1. Visit Windows Service Pack Center to view and download the latest service packs.
  2. Visit Windows Update to check that your computer has the latest security updates.
Improve the security of Internet Explorer

Using the most recent version of Internet Explorer will give you the best protection. You can further protect yourself by configuring your security settings as follows:

  1. Click tools, Internet Options, and select the security tab.
  2. Select the Internet zone at the top of the dialog box.
  3. Set the security level to Medium-high using the slider (if not visible, click Default level), then click OK.
