Protect your own computer from viruses

Before connecting your own computer to the Kent network, you must ensure that all its security settings are optimised.

How to fully secure your PC

In order to abide by University IT regulations you need to:

1. ensure that you are running current anti-virus software (free software available)
2. make sure you are getting regular critical security updates
3. use a suitable internet connection firewall (where appropriate); new Windows/Mac PCs should have a firewall on already
4. use an appropriate anti-spyware/malware program and schedule regular scans
5. password-protect your user accounts and turn off file sharing
6. if you think your computer a virus or malware infection, follow the steps below.

Think your machine is infected?

Disconnect from the University network immediately and run a security scan using your anti-virus software. If this does not clear it, run McAfee Stinger if you have it or run one of these Malware tools. Contact helpdesk if this does not work. Only re-connect to the Kent network once your anti-virus software has produced a clean anti-virus report.

If your machine is slow

It could be infected with spyware or a virus, so run a scan to check this. It could be slow if you have two anti-virus software programs installed; if you do, you need to remove one. You might need to start the computer in safe mode: on start-up, tap the F8 key until a white menu appears, then choose 'Safe Mode'.
