Web-based printing

You can send documents to selected University printers in Student PC areas from any computer, mobile device, or library laptop that's connected to the internet (not iPhones or iPads). There's no need to connect to the Kent network or install any printer drivers.

Web-based printing for your computer, mac or mobile device

Send documents (Microsoft Office, Microsoft XPS and PDF formats only) to University of Kent printers in Student PC areas, from any computer or mobile device with an internet connection. There's no need to install print drivers.

Note that web-based printing is subject to the usual printing costs. This service is not currently available for iPhone or iPad.

  1. Browse to http://printing.kent.ac.uk* and log in with your Kent username eg (abc1) and password.
    *If you are off-campus, use https://printing-kent-ac-uk.chain.kent.ac.uk instead.
  2. On the next page, click Web Print in the left-hand menu.
  3. On the Web Print page, click the Submit a Job link.
  4. On the next page, click the button next to the printer that you would like to send your document to, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Print Options and Account Selection button.
  5. On the Options page, change the number in the text box if you require more than one copy. Then click the Upload Document button.
  6. On the next page, click the Browse button and choose the document to be printed from your computer or mobile device. Then click the Upload & Complete button.
  7. The next page shows the status of your print job. When your document has been printed the status will contain the word Finished.
  8. Collect your print-out from the printer.


If the printer you want to use is not available for web-based printing, or if the document you want to print is not Microsoft Office, XPS or PDF format, you should install a print driver on your computer or print from a campus Student PC instead.


Find and install a printer

If the printer you want to use is not available on web-based printing, you will need to connect to the Kent network and install a print driver.

Find a student printer by location, name, colour or paper-size

Academic departments may provide printers and PCs to their students and staff: these are not listed in this website and details should be requested from the relevant department.

Install a printer on a student PC or a PC running Windows 7/Vista

How to install a Kent networked printer on a student PC, or any PC with Windows 7 or Vista:
  1. Click on the Start/Windows Orb icon in the bottom left of your screen.
  2. In the Start Search box type printers and press the Enter key.
  3. Click Add a Printer (near the top of the Printers window).
  4. Click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer in the Add printer window.
  5. Click the Stop button to stop it searching for printers (Vista only).
  6. Click The printer that I want isn't listed.
  7. Choose Select a shared printer by name in the Find a printer by name or TCP/IP address box, and enter the server name and printer name of the required printer in the following format:

    \\printserver2.kent.ac.uk\gill2
    replacing server and printer details as appropriate (check student printer names and locations if not sure)
  8. If asked for a username, enter your IT account username in the format ukc\xyz1 replacing xyz1 with your details.
  9. Click Next. Windows will now try to connect to the printer. If you see a message asking you to install a driver, click install driver.
  10. Click Next in the Type a printer name box (Vista only).
  11. Click Finish in the You've successfully added... box.
  12. The printer will now appear in the Printers window and is ready to use.

Install a printer on a PC running XP

How to install a Kent networked printer on a PC running Windows XP:
  1. Click Start, then Printers and Faxes (if this option is not visible immediately, clickSettings, Control Panel, then Printers and Faxes).
  2. Click Add a Printer from the left-hand menu
  3. Click Next to continue.
  4. Choose to Add a Network printer and click Next.
  5. Select Find a printer in the directory and click Next to continue.
  6. Select A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer and click Next
  • From a student PC or staff managed deskop, select Find a printer in the directory and search:
    By name: type the name (for example, gill2) into the name box and click Find Now.
    By location: for example, type 'Library' in the location box and click Find Now.
    Click once on the required printer to select it, then click OK.
  • From your own PC, select Connect to a printer on the internet or a home/office network and enter the server name and printer name for the required printer in the following format:

    \\printserver2.kent.ac.uk\gill2
    replacing server and printer details as appropriate (check student printer names and locations if not sure)
  1. If asked for a username, enter your IT account username in the format ukc\xyz1 replacing xyz1 with your Kent IT account username.
  2. You will be prompted: Do you want to use this as the default printer?
    Select Yes or No (the first printer installed is set automatically as the default).
  3. Click Finish. You may see a dialog box appear, warning you that printer drivers are about to be installed. This can be ignored.

Install a printer on Mac OS X

Please note: problems may occur when printing from Mac computers to the University's windows-based print system. You may wish to use web-based printing instead - for more details refer to the Web-based printing FAQ.

How to check which version of OS X is on your Mac
  1. Click on the Apple icon in the top left of the screen and select the first option, About This Mac.
  2. On the About This Mac box that pops up, the version number is directly beneath the Mac OS X title.
Instructions for Mac OS X version 10.7

These instructions are provided on a best efforts basis and Helpdesk may not be able to offer specific support.

  1. Click the Apple menu (top left of screen), and select System Preferences.
  2. Click the Print & Fax icon, then click the + button on the left of the window. 
  3. Click the Advanced button in the toolbar (if this is not visible, hold down the Ctrl key, click on the toolbar, click Customize Toolbar, then drag the Advanced button to the toolbar and click Done). 
  4. When the drop-down menus become available (this may take a minute):
    - select Windows Printer via Spoolss from the Type drop-down menu
    - in the URL box, enter smb:// followed by the server name and printer name of the required printer in the following format:
    smb://servername.kent.ac.uk/printername for example smb://printserver2.kent.ac.uk/gill2 (where printserver2 is the server name and gill2 is the printer name) (check student printer names and locations if not sure).
  5. In the Name box, enter the name of the printer eg gill2.
  6. You may wish to fill in the location of the printer to remind you where it is. 
  7. In the drop-down list Print Using, select the make and model of the printer. If it is not listed, either select Generic PostScript Printer or download the model of printer from http://support.apple.com/kb/dl907 (HP printers) or the manufacturer's website (other printers).
  8. If the printer has duplex unit, tick duplex to enable double-sided printing. Enable other printer options as required, then click OK.
  9. Click Add. Close System Preferences.
  10. Open Terminal, either by typing Terminal into Spotlight, or from Applications, Utilities.
  11. Type the command sudo lpadmin -p gill2 -o auth-info-required=username,password replacing gill2 with the name of the printer you want to use, and press enter. Note: do not replace the words username and password.
  12. When prompted to enter a password, enter the password for your computer (not your Kent password).
  13. When you print a document you will be prompted to login: use your Kent IT account details.
Instructions for OS X versions 10.6 and 10.5
  1. Click the Apple menu (top left of screen), and select System Preferences.
  2. Click the Print & Fax icon.
  3. Click the + button on the left of the window.

  6. In the Name box, enter the name of the printer eg Gill2
  7. You may wish to fill in the Location of the printer to remind you where it is.
  8. In the drop down list Print Using, select Generic PostScript Printer.
  9. Click Add. Close System Preferences.
  10. When you print a document you will be prompted to login: use your Kent IT account details.
