Check your username is entered correctly
Usernames consist of initials and a number eg abc1.
- Use the abc1 format to log on to Student PCs, the Student Data System, Moodle, the Student Portal and Kent Union (members only - email kuonline@kent.ac.uk if you can't login, or sturec@kent.ac.uk to join).
- Use abc1@kent.ac.uk to connect to Kent's Wireless Service.
- Use abc1@kentforlife.net to sign in to Live@edu (abc1@kent.ac.uk for current students who started before 1 April 2012).
- Use ukc\abc1 to log on to Medway student PCs, and for accessing some services when off-campus.
Enter your password correctly
- Your password is case-sensitive: ensure the CAPS LOCK key is off when typing.
- Check that your keyboard is entering the expected characters by typing your password into a text editor such as Word (just check that nobody is looking over your shoulder as you do this). Mac keyboards or non-UK keyboards may need checking.
Change your password
Try changing your password as it may have expired. Also try this if you can log in to some systems and not others, eg: if you can get into Moodle but not your email account.
Forgotten your password?
Students: use the password reset service [10].
Staff: contact the helpdesk [11] with your staff number (from your KentOne card or payslip); if you do not have it to hand, you can nominate a more senior member of staff to verify your identity (please ask their permission and then give their details to helpdesk).

Find out why your account has been deleted
Has your account been deleted incorrectly? Contact Student Records (if you are a student) or Human Resources (for staff) if you believe that we have been told incorrectly that you have left the University.
If your account is on annual renewal and you did not confirm when prompted by email that the account is still active, contact Helpdesk so that we can re-activate your account.
Avoid the need to log in when on campus (staff only)
If you get prompted for username and password often, and are logged in on campus using the UKC domain (if you entered UKC as the domain when you logged in to the computer), then adding the following local trusted sites in Internet Explorer can help.
Add the web address as a trusted local website:
Open Internet Explorer and click Tools, Internet Options, Security, Local Intranet (choose Local Intranet and NOT Trusted Sites from the dialog box when prompted), Sites, Advanced then add the following addresses as trusted local sites:
See what services your IT account provides access to
Your IT account grants access to many online resources and services, including:
- Email: access your Kent email account.
- Spam filter: reduce the amount of junk email in your Inbox.
- Mailing lists: create an email mailing list or subscribe to an existing one.
- Printing: view the status and history of print jobs and how much trees, carbon and energy your printing has used.
- Newspaper archives: search or browse online archives of many UK and International newspapers.
I am staying on to start another course - can I keep my IT account?
If you start a new course at the University, you will be issued with a new Kent username and password, and a new email account.
You will not be able to use your previous username and password, except to access your old email account.
Copy files, emails and bookmarks to a new location
Copying files
Email them to an alternative address, save to a memory stick or save to CD (pdf).
Forward any emails you wish to keep to another email address. For more details see Managing Email.
Exporting data from ConnectMail
Email, calendar, tasks, notes or personal contacts can be exported from Outlook into a file that can be used to import the data back into another version of Outlook (eg, if you are leaving Kent) or into other programs.
- Open Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 to access ConnectMail.
- Click File and then Import and Export.
- Choose Export to a file then click Next.
- From the list of file types, choose Personal Folder File (.pst) then click Next. Within the folder that shows your name, locate the folder you wish to export.
- You can export folders individually (eg just choose Calendar) or copy the full folder structure (tick the option to include sub-folders).
- Once the required folder(s) are selected, click Next.
- You will be offered a default location to save the exported file: click Browse to change the location of the saved file to a location you regularly use.
- Give the file a recognisable name (such as mycalendar.pst), click OK and click Finish.
- Click OK: your folder is exported to the chosen location.
- Repeat the steps for any other items you wish to export (saving each file with a unique name to distinguish them from each other).
If you intend to import the data into a different email program to Outlook, run the process again saving the file as a Comma Separated Values (Windows) file type. This is a backup in case the Personal Folder File (.pst) you have saved is not compatible with your new email program. The files can now be copied from that location on to a memory stick, CD or DVD.
Copying web bookmarks / favourites
To export favourites: from Internet Explorer click File, Import and Export, and follow on-screen instructions to save the file as bookmark.htm (choose a location that enables you to transfer the file to a new PC).
To import favourites: save the bookmark.htm file to the PC. Open Internet Explorer, click File, Import and Export, and select the bookmark.htm file.
