An Information Services project is underway to extend WiFi coverage on the Canterbury campus to all areas of all buildings by autumn 2013.
New areas in academic offices, professional service departments and teaching/research laboratories are being identified. Areas of partial or poor coverage will have their coverage improved. Work will be carried out at no cost to schools/departments.
This is the next phase of the WiFi rollout project, which saw WiFi installed in Canterbury campus student bedrooms in 2012.
Work so far has involved surveys to identify access point locations and additional network infrastructure requirements. There is a demand for WiFi in outdoor spaces too, particularly in social areas. We are consulting with students and working with student representatives to identify and prioritise areas.
Some lecture theatres and seminar rooms that have been identified as high demand areas will have their signal boosted. In the Templeman Library, also a high demand area, we will be improving both the wireless coverage and the quality of service by upgrading existing access points and adding more where needed.
Most of the work will happen in the Summer Vacation so out of teaching or exam periods, because installing access points can be noisy. Where possible noise will be kept to a minimum during office hours.
Connecting to WiFi will also be made easier for users, as we are working to improve the setup process.
