Madonna’s latest film is a lavishly realised curiosity that eschews the rules of traditional biopic or costume drama. Rising star Andrea Riseborough (Brighton Rock) stars as Wallis Simpson, who Madonna follows from 1920s Shanghai to England as she fatefully meets and falls in love with the future King Edward VIII.
Interwoven is the story of Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish – Bright Star), the young wife of a high-society shrink in 1980s New York, who develops an obsession with Simpson and escapes from her unfulfilling life with visits to the auction house where Simpson’s belongings are being sold.
