In this tragicomic film from Nanni Moretti (Dear Diary, The Son’s Room) a new Pope is being elected but panics before he is due to appear on St Peter’s balcony to address the faithful. His advisors, unable to persuade him he’s the right man for the job, seek secret aid from a sceptical psychotherapist (played by Moretti himself).
There’s both satire and broader hilarity at work in this delightful film - one notable scene sees a bunch of frustrated cardinals enjoying a basketball tournament - but this is also a wry and subtle story of one man’s wavering faith, as well as a reflection on contemporary Catholicism.
