International Study in the Faculty of Humanities

Students attending the Skepsi Conference at Reid Hall

Creating opportunities for an international student experience is an important aspect across the Schools within our Faculty. We have been one of the first Faculties nationwide to offer, since September 2011, all our students the opportunity to apply to study abroad, and we remain one of the very few universities offering this unique opportunity on any programme of studies.

We are particularly proud of our successfully established annual exchange with universities in South-East Asia, where we have Faculty-wide exchange agreements with Hong Kong University, Renmin University in Beijing, and – from 2012/13 – also with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, while we have also recently signed Cross-Humanities exchange agreements with Ghent University in Belgium, the University of Calgary in Canada, Virginia Tech in the US and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, with more to follow.

These amazing opportunities greatly enrich our students’ transcultural competence and their employment prospects far beyond their subject knowledge.

At home, we continue to support initiatives of Schools and subjects – such as field trips, student excursions, joint seminars with partner universities abroad – with a dedicated mobility fund of £50,000 each academic year. Together with the University’s Centre for English and World Languages, students have also the opportunity to acquire foreign languages – some as ‘wild module’ components as part of their degree, others in optional after-hour classes. Especially our postgraduate students across the Faculty furthermore benefit from our campus in Paris, where several MA-programmes which are partly based in Canterbury, partly in Paris, are offered, and which is also serving as a regularly used facility to host short-term student excursions and graduate conferences, and where we plan to launch an annual Humanities Summer School in the future..

Meanwhile, more than 450 international students come into our Faculty every year from abroad to spend a year or a term with us, while approx. 15% of our students are international students doing their entire degree at Kent.

As Faculty Director of Internationalisation, I oversee and coordinate our various activities and ongoing new developments. Please browse this site for an overview of our International Study opportunities, and do not hesitate to get in touch with your enquiries, comments, and feedback.
