Short Visits

Visitors of 4 weeks or less should be dealt with by Schools on an informal basis. All other Visitors require approval by the Head of School, Dean and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (except Visiting Training Fellows who required Head of School and Dean’s approval only).

Visiting Scholars

Visiting Scholars are prestigious visitors from other institutions whose visits here have a positive impact on the research culture at Kent, and who may be invited to attend as a Visitor. The title proposed for Visiting Appointments should reflect the titles of members of staff at Kent ie. Visiting Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Research Assistant, Research Associate, Senior Research Associate, Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow.

Visiting Professor or Reader

For recommendations for appointment as a Visiting Professor or Reader for persons who have or have had Chairs at UK universities please complete the form. For all other recommendations for a Visiting Professor or Reader, Schools must complete the form and ensure that the individual’s status is similar to those in post at Kent and provide a covering letter, from the Head of School, indicating the reasons why the appointment should be made at this level. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor may consider whether references or other advice should be taken before final approval.

Visiting Training Fellows (VTF)

Visiting Training Fellows are visitors who are researchers or academics at other institutions. They visit Kent in order to further a piece of research in collaboration with one or more of the academic staff at Kent.

They may attend, but not register for, taught courses, and they cannot receive any award. Although it is recognised that all academic visitors contribute to the life of the University, such visitors are generally characterised by the fact they wish to visit Kent primarily for their own benefit, and they will usually initiate the contact with the University themselves.

VTF's sign an agreement that all Intellectual Property Rights generated by them while at the University will belong to the University. However, if they are likely to produce commercially valuable Intellectual Property, or have confidential information disclosed to them, please contact Business at Kent ( www.kent.ac.uk/business ) to discuss this further as a more detailed agreement may be necessary.

Visiting Training Fellows will be charged a fee which is set by the School

Once approved by the Dean, an invitation letter (in duplicate) will be sent to them in which they are asked to sign and return one copy accepting the terms above regarding Intellectual Property Rights. Only after this letter has been signed and returned will the Deans Office arrange for their details to go onto the staff database to enable them to have email and library access.

Fellowships

Fellowships awarded to the University (and the funding of any visitor paid by a third party) to allow a visitor to come to the University and undertake research for an agreed period are research awards and are managed by the Research Office to ensure their inclusion in the Research Assessment Exercise and other returns.

Appointment Letters

Once approved by the Dean and the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor a letter will be sent by the Dean to the individual. HR will arrange for details to go onto the staff database which will enable the individual to gain email and library access for the period their appointment has been approved. Any changes to the dates of appointment should be notified to the Dean’s Office.
