Sign Language Taster 6 Week Course

Duration

 6 weeks of 1.5 hourly sessions

Aims

To provide a basic introduction to sign language so that staff are able and comfortable using signing to meet and greet.

 

Objectives

To promote deaf awareness and an understanding of deaf culture,

To cover general everyday conversation.

 

 

Who will benefit?

All staff with an interest in learning more about signing and deaf awareness.

In particular, front line staff (eg reception staff, library staff, Estates, Hospitality, Gulbenkian, Sports Centre) EDI Reps, staff from Finance, staff working with people who are hearing impaired, senior tutors. 

NB: These sessions links in with Promoting Disability Awareness training course.

Information
Covered

Week 1 – Introductions, alphabet and names.
Week 2 – Family relationships (mother, father, brother, sister).
Week 3 – Colours, numbers, ages.
Week 4 – Deaf awareness, culture, gestures.
Week 5 – Communication issues, lip reading.
Week 6 – Feelings, food, work related issues.

 

The sessions will be informal and participative, with group work and pair work. 

6 week course starting:

Wednesdays 5, 12, 19 and 26 June, 3 and 10 July 2013 (1 1/2 hour sessions). You need to attend all sessions.
