Pilot Leadership for Areas of Significant Responsibility (LASR)

The University of Kent’s HR Strategy outlines the need to continue to develop leadership capabilities across the University and building on the existing leadership development provisions, the University has developed a Leadership programme applicable both to Academic leaders and managers in Professional Services.

The ‘Leadership for Areas of Significant Responsibility’ (LASR) programme complements the existing Leadership Programme for Professional Services Managers (LPPSM) which is for for administrative managers in Professional Services/Academic Schools and the Heads Leadership and Management Programme (HLMP).

The LASR programme incorporates four 1-day workshops spread across a 10-month period running through 2012, with the fifth and final ½-day workshop in January 2013. One-to-one development planning sessions and small mixed learning group sets are also interspersed across the year. The programme as a whole integrates formal, structured learning with informal knowledge sharing, peer mentoring and self-directed professional development.

The programme focuses on the themes of:

  • Managing strategically within an HE context (workshop 1)
  • Collaborating with, and getting the best out of, others (workshop 2)
  • Influencing and power (workshop 3)
  • Leading change and managing conflict (workshop 4)

Equality and diversity is a further theme which is threaded throughout the programme, prompting people to incorporate the main principles of managing individual difference as part of their everyday approach to managing and leading.

The overall structure and content of the programme has been overseen by a Steering Group comprising Academic Heads, Professional Service Heads and input from the Deans. The Steering Group works with the programme facilitators to ensure that the content and flow of the programme addresses the leadership and management development needs of Academic and Professional leaders.  24 people are participating in the pilot programme; half are professional services staff and half are academic staff representing academic schools across all three faculties.
