Professor Keith Mander and Learning and Development held the Annual Induction for New Heads in September 2011. The event was attended by new Heads of Schools, Directors of Professional Services, and Medway Academic Leads.
Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow gave a presentation on the current vision and strategy for the University of Kent at the event and members of Executive Group, Deans and other senior staff members led introductions on important topics such as Balancing Leadership & Management, Financial Management, Research, Internationalisation and other topics of interest. Another important feature was the presentation by two Heads who were involved in last year’s programme on the topic ‘What it’s Like to be a Head.’
The Induction event at Hythe also serves as the launch of the annual Heads Leadership & Management Programme, which runs over the course of the academic year and allows the Heads to meet regularly as a group to discuss important topics during workshop modules on Strategic Leadership & Planning, Leading People, Teams and Organisations and People Management Skills for a Diverse Environment. Executive Group members and Deans get involved in the programme as guest speakers and new this year will be the opportunity for participants to receive personal coaching and to participate in action learning peer coaching sets.
The programme also provides in depth internally led briefings beginning in October on topics such as Finance, the University Resource Allocation model (RAM) and Student Planning.
