Flexible courses innovative teaching

European History BA, Hons.

The European History programme is virtually identical in structure, content and flexibility to our History BA programme, with the notable exception of a year abroad in a European partner institution.

As a four-year programme, students will spend their first and second year in Canterbury and their third year with one of our partner instutitions in France or Germany, before returning to Canterbury for their final year. As teaching in the year abroad will be in the native language, it is a requirement that students applying to this course have a strong grounding in a relevant, modern European language.

All of our modules are rooted in the research interests of our academics, so the modules offered to students are equally wide ranging. More than 70 undergraduate history modules invite you to study subjects as diverse as the crusades to the Cold War; from the imact of science on 19th century culture to the totalitarian regimes of Stalin's Russia and Hitler's Third Reich; from Anglo-Saxon England to the French revolution.

Our programmes are carefully crafted to allow undergraduates to tailor their degree to their own interests. As such, we only have one first-year core module: Making History, which aims to ease the progression from further education by providing an essential grounding in the disciplines and skills required for historical study.

The first year also provides an ideal opportunity for year students to experiment with different areas of academic study. Students are encouraged to investigate areas of history that they have not studied before, in order to enable them to make informed decisions regarding second and third-year study options, leading in to their dissertation.

Location

The School of History is based at the University of Kent's Canterbury campus.

Called Durovernum by the Romans, Canterbury is a city steeped in history and as such makes a stimulating environment for anyone wishing to study the past. The green and leafy campus is situated on a hill overlooking the city, and is conveniently located for travel to both London and the continent.

The resources available to undergraduates are also excellent. Historians gain access to a wealth of books, journals and other resources through the university's Templeman Library (which is home to over a million items, and the British Cartoon Archive), alongside privileged access to the Canterbury Cathedral Library and Archives. This represents an opportunity to work with a range of top-quality primary sources - such as the Cathedral's unique collection of medieval and early modern manuscripts.

For the year abroad our partner institutions are:

  • Aviginon, France
  • Poitiers, France
  • Regensburg, Germany
