Part-time Study
The School of History gives part-time students the chance to pursue a wide range of historical studies, from Kentish history to international history and from medieval times up to the twentieth century.
The school has an international reputation for research and can offer you access to a variety of primary sources such as medieval manuscripts and local archives. By studying history at Kent, you have every chance to develop your abilities as a historian discovering and analysing historical evidence.
Part-time study comprises several levels, each of which usually takes two years to complete. The programme, at level one, offers two courses; the Certificate in History at Canterbury and the Certificate in Local History at Tonbridge, our centre for local history.
Students who complete level one can then follow on to the second level and chose one of our two diplomas. These are the Diploma in History and the Diploma in Local History.
For students who have completed these two levels the School of History offers a Part-Time BA(Hons) in History. This is usually taken by those who have progressed through the certificate and diploma levels.
The process above is generally applicable to those wishing to enter our part-time programmes however it may be possible to enter directly at diploma or degree level depending on previous qualifications and/or experience.
You may also be able to progress to diploma level from the Certificate in Combined Studies (CCS) if you have successfully completed at least two appropriate history modules in the CCS.
You may also take modules within the full-time History programme as part of your study for part-time awards, subject to the agreement of the appropriate programme directors.
