The Project

'Fiscal Culture in Early Tudor England'

This scholarship is being offered to work on ‘Fiscal Culture in Early Tudor England’ (pdf), a research project supervised by Dr David Grummitt.

The Scholarship

In preparation for the University’s 50th anniversary in 2015, Kent has established an additional 100 doctoral scholarships to be awarded annually from 2012. Known as Kent’s 50th Anniversary Scholars, successful candidates will demonstrate academic excellence and outstanding research potential.

This scholarship is available to UK, EU and overseas students and will cover tuition fees plus a maintenance bursary of approximately £13,590.

The scholarship will be offered for one year in the first instance, renewable for a maximum of three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance.

It is also expected that during the second and third years of the scholarship, recipients will undertake about four hours teaching per week as Graduate Teaching Assistants.

Applicant Specification

The scholarship competition is open to postgraduate research applicants who have applied for or are applying to the School of History for entry in the academic year starting September 2012. (please visit Kent's postgraduate pages for comprehensive information about how to apply for postgraduate research study).

Candidates must hold a master’s degree (merit or distinction) in a relevant subject.

Application Process

In addition to completing an application for postgraduate research study, applicants for this School of History supported, project-related University of Kent 50th Anniversary Scholarship must provide:

  • A copy of their CV.
  • A covering letter explaining why they are interested in the project and why they believe they would be well-placed to carry it out. This letter must include the applicant's full name, address, telephone number and email address.

Where available, the School will take two academic references for each scholarship applicant from their application for study. If an applicant has not requested two academic references in their application for study the covering letter should also include the names of two academic referees and their contact details (postal address, e-mail address, and telephone number).

If the applicant has ideas about how s/he would like to modify the project outline, s/he should explain this also in the letter. Candidates will neither be necessarily advantaged nor disadvantaged by proposing such a modification; the criterion for success will be the candidate’s suitability for the project in whatever form – original or modified – they propose to execute it.

Completed application forms should be sent by post or by email to:
