Jack Lemmon is at his best as the anxious junior exec in a New York insurance firm who, in order to climb the corporate ladder, allows his managers to use his Upper West Side apartment for their romantic assignations – but runs into trouble when he finds himself sharing a girlfriend, elevator operator Fran (Shirley Maclaine), with callous boss J. D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray).
