Description

The creation of the vibrator - during the height of Victorian prudishness - is the fascinating subject of this witty, sly film. Hugh Dancy (Adam) plays the doctor who, specialising in women’s medicine, finds himself asked to cure “hysteria” - a blanket term for everything from nerves to frigidity to nymphomania - and, seeking advice from new technologist Smythe (Rupert Everett) happens upon an unlikely cure. Maggie Gyllenhaal also stars in this very amusing comedy about the unlikely advance of women’s sexual liberation amid social repression.
