Luc Besson | France, UK | 2011 | 135mins | Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis, Jonathan Raggett, Jonathan Woodhouse
Director Luc Besson – usually to be found directing outré, cultish films such as Léon, The Fifth Element and his recent fantasy Adèle Blanc-Sec – takes on the remarkable life of Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy activist only recently released from an over decade-long, internationally deplored house arrest in this inspiring biopic.
Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) stars as Suu Kyi and ably portrays her intelligence, grace and the incredible personal sacrifices she made to highlight her commitment to Burmese democracy; notably the heartbreaking absences she has endured from her children and her husband, Dr. Michael Aris (David Thewlis). Besson’s film is a timely look at the life of an extraordinary contemporary icon and a stirring reminder of how horribly oppressive the Burmese political regime still is.
