Description

Auteur Béla Tarr’s immersive, fascinating last film (Sátántangó, Werckmeister Harmonies) is centred around philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s reputed mental breakdown in 1889 in Turin.

 

Infirm and elderly, Tarr follows a man living with his daughter in a remote farm on the Hungarian plains, fending for themselves in a definitively bleak landscape and visited by odd travellers. Elegiac and lucid, it seems to be a commentary on the universe’s indifference to man. And – as a work of great depth and spiritual substance – it’s a high note for the visionary filmmaker to end his career on.
