Declan Donnellan, Nick Ormerod | 2012 | UK, France, Italy | 103mins | Uma Thurman, Robert Pattinson, Christina Ricci
Robert Pattinson (Twilight series) gives an outstanding performance in this stylish, star-filled period drama reminiscent of Dangerous Liaisons.
Adapted from the novel by Guy de Maupassant, the film follows the ascent of ambitious but penniless ex-soldier Georges Duroy (Pattinson) through the upper echelons of the Parisian elite; a rise enabled by his considerable effect on high-society women including Madeleine (Uma Thurman), Virginie (Kristin Scott-Thomas) and Clothilde (Christina Ricci) – as well as his almost complete ruthlessness.
Robert Pattinson carries the film wonderfully well as the amoral, duplicitous Duroy, showing he can deliver grown-up chills and thrills as well as vampiric ones.
