Colleges

Introduction

There are five Colleges situated on the main University campus at Canterbury: Darwin, Eliot, Keynes, Rutherford and the Woolf Graduate College. All students become a member of a College on Registration, and retain their College affiliation throughout their study.

Like most communities, the College environment brings together people of many backgrounds and with varying tastes and lifestyles. This leaflet is designed to assist everyone and to help students to live and work together in a civilised and stress-free environment.

You will become a junior member of one of the five Colleges at Registration. (Your College affiliation can easily be checked on the student data system.) We hope that throughout your time at the University of Kent, you will find an opportunity to join in the Collegiate activities and make full use of the social facilities. The Junior College Committees (JCC’s), are an important part of College life. Committee members are elected annually by the student members of each College, and hold specific roles covering issues including welfare, women’s rights, the promotion of student entertainments and many more functions. Each College has a JCC office, the opening hours of which vary from College to College. (See your Students’ Union and JCC web sites on the Student Portal for further information www.kent.ac.uk/student/campus.html)

The Masters’ Offices exist to:

  • offer advice, help and support: they are a first port of call when you need assistance of any kind. All matters will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.
  • enforce the University Student Regulations, the code of conduct that all students must abide by whilst they study at the University, wherever they may reside, be it on or off the campus.

Follow the Platinum Rule endorsed by the University’s Equality Promotion Group: "Treat others as THEY want to be treated"

Darwin College

Darwin College is named after the eminent scientist Charles Darwin (1809-1882), whose home was in west Kent, where he wrote The Origin of Species and other books on the theory of evolution. The first Darwin students arrived in October 1970, when the College officially opened. The Darwin Houses were built close by in the 1980’s. Each house name is associated with the life and career of Charles Darwin, features of the site, famous local people, or the history of the College.

Eliot College

The longest established College, founded in 1965, it is named after the poet and playwright T S Eliot, linked to Canterbury through the play Murder in the Cathedral, which narrates the events leading up to the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. Magnificent views of the town and Cathedral can be seen from the dining hall windows.

Keynes College

Keynes College opened in 1968 as the third of four Colleges. It is named after the leading economist of the early twentieth century, John Maynard Keynes (1883 - 1946). Architecturally Keynes represents a radical departure from the formal cruciform layout of the first two Colleges, with its lighter and more open style. The College boasts the Keynes Pond and ducks, which have become a much-loved and distinctive feature of College life.

Rutherford College

Rutherford College was the second College to be opened, designed in a mirror image to its counterpart Eliot, and was founded in 1966. It was named after Lord Rutherford, OM, FRS (1871 - 1937), who, in developing the nuclear theory of the atom, became one of the outstanding scientists of the twentieth century. Its commemorative garden is a strong feature of this College and can be found between the College and extension, now the English Building.

Woolf College

The Woolf Graduate College offers state-of-the-art accommodation for mainly postgraduate students, and includes a 480 seat lecture theatre. It is named after one of the major English novelists and public intellectuals of the twentieth century.  Virginia Woolf was a regular visitor to Kent, notably to Sissinghurst (the home of Vita Sackville-West). She was also known to convalesce at Moat House in Blean, on the outskirts of Canterbury, and wrote that even compared with Florence and Venice there is no lovelier place in the world than Canterbury. Over 100 years since she began her professional writing career her popularity and influence live on.

Masters’ Offices

The Masters’ Offices bring together a team of trained staff working together to support and assist students in all matters of welfare and guidance. If you have a concern, difficulty, query or problem, you should not hesitate to contact the Master, or call in to the Master’s Office for further help or assistance. Normal office hours in term time are Monday to Friday, between 9.00am and 5.00pm (with 1 hour closure for lunch). Collegiate information and regulations

Accommodation

Read carefully your Student Life Handbook and your room agreement.
Kitchen areas must be left in a clean and sanitary condition. No additional cooking equipment may be kept in rooms or kitchens, other than the items listed in the Accommodation Brochure. Refrigerators, grill pans, deep fat fryers, portable gas stoves, etc are strictly forbidden and will be confiscated. Cleaning staff must have reasonable access to the rooms. Any additional items of furniture are therefore not permitted. Infringements of these regulations will be penalised. Colleges are locked at midnight  and residents are issued with a swipe card to allow entrance after this time. All non-residents are required to leave at midnight. If you intend to be absent from your room for more than three days please inform the College/Park Wood Reception. For general accommodation enquiries contact Kent Hospitality, Accommodation Office, Tanglewood (situated at the rear of Keynes College Car Park). Telephone number 01227 766660, Email accomm@kent.ac.uk , or visit the web page www.kent.ac.uk/accommodation

Accidents

First Aid boxes are kept at every Reception desk and all Receptionists are trained first-aiders. See also Medical Advice information below. All accidents, however trivial, must be reported immediately to the College Reception, where the appropriate forms are available for completion.

Cars and parking

All students resident in the Canterbury campus (including Parkwood Courts) are not eligible for a parking permit, and may not bring their cars on to the campus. An exclusion zone for off campus students is also now in force. All parking on campus is subject to the Regulations for Management of Traffic in the University, details of which can be found in the General Student Regulations (Section 5). Breach of these regulations will result in disciplinary action and heavy fines. Repeated infringements may prejudice future applications for a parking permit. Bicycles can only be kept in designated areas and may be impounded if illegally parked. Students are encouraged to use the frequent and inexpensive bus service which runs between the campus and city centre. For full car parking information see the estates web site: www.kent.ac.uk/estates-local/car-park/studentpermits.htm .

Computing services (Information Services)

Study areas are available in all Colleges. For general campus computing services see web page www.kent.ac.uk/is

Discipline

The underlying principle is simply: do not act in an inconsiderate, offensive or disruptive manner. Violations will be treated very seriously. Penalties include warnings, fines, and being required to vacate your College room or in extreme cases, exclusion from the university. Consult the University Regulations for Students web page www.kent.ac.uk/regulations

Drugs

The taking of drugs remains a criminal offence and will in no circumstances be tolerated. See the disciplinary procedures relating to drug use www.kent.ac.uk/guidance/druguse.htm

Fire alarms and safety precautions

The College Fire Alarm bells are tested once a week, for approximately thirty seconds. At all other times the building must be evacuated when the alarm sounds continuously. There is a penalty for failure to do so. It is a disciplinary offence to tamper with any fire safety equipment. Naked flames are not permitted in connection with any appliances and it is an offence to burn candles in Colleges. All students should consult the Health and Safety section of the Student Life Handbook, a copy of which is normally left in each college room at the beginning of the academic year. They are also available direct from the University Safety Office, located in the Marlowe Building. Further informationcan be obtained on the web www.kent.ac.uk/safety

ID Cards

Students must carry their ID Cards with them at all times and should show them to University personnel on request. In particular they must show their ID card to Security Personnel when requested to do so. This is to assist in maintaining a safe campus environment for the benefit of all. The College Masters regard failure to co-operate, in particular failure to show ID, as a serious breach of discipline.

Licensing

Kent Hospitality is licensed to sell wine, beer and spirits in the Colleges. It is illegal to take alcoholic drink purchased into unlicensed areas for immediate consumption. These areas include the administrative and private teaching rooms, study-bedrooms and other rooms used for domestic purposes only. It is also illegal to consume alcoholic drinks in licensed parts of the Colleges, except during the bar opening hours. Drunk and disorderly conduct is regarded a breach of the student disciplinary regulations.

Lockers

Are available for hire in some of the Colleges. For further information contact the Master’s Offices

Lost property

Any lost property should be reported immediately to the College Reception.
