Financial Support for Full-time UK/EU Undergraduate Students

The finance details for full-time UK/EU students is slightly different depending whether you applied before or during/after 2008. Use the tabs below to find out about the range of support available to you:

Note that the maintenance loan and grant are put together for the total amount of maintenance support you are eligible for. The proportionate amount of support that is made up of loans or grants will depend on your household income. So students with lower household incomes will receive more grant and less loan, while students with higher household incomes will receive less grant and more loan.

Tuition Fee Loan

The table below shows how much support is available for tuition fees:

No full-time UK or EU undergraduate student will have to pay fees before they start university or whilst they are studying.

Instead students will be able to put off paying their tuition fees by taking out a Tuition Fee Loan by applying to Student Finance England. Students will have the option to defer part or all of these fees (maximum £3,375).

Students will start to repay the tuition fee loan following graduation, once their earnings exceed £15,000 per year.

Maintenance Loan

(UK students and some EU students) The table below shows how much support is available for the Maintenance Loan:

Students receiving £1,292 or more of Maintenance grant can receive a Maintenance Loan of £3,453 (those living away from home outside London).

Those receiving any amount of Special Support grant can receive a Maintenance Loan of /£4,950 (those living away from home outside London).

Students receiving less than £1,292 of Maintenance grant can have the difference between the amount received and £1292 replaced as an additional Maintenance Loan (maximum Maintenance Loan of £4,950 for those living away from home outside London).

Maintenance/Special Support Grant

(UK students and some EU students) The table below shows how much support is available for the Maintenance Loan:

Maintenance/ Special Support Grant £2,906 £2,906

UK students and certain EU students from low income backgrounds can apply to their Local Authority for a Maintenance or Special Support grant, maximum /£2,906 per year.

The Maintenance grant will be paid in full to all students with a parental or family income of below £25,000 and in part to those with incomes between £25,000 and £50,020.

Certain students will be eligible for a Special Support grant instead of the Maintenance grants. These students will (a) have dependent children and do not have a partner or (b) have dependent children and their partner is a also a full-time student; (c) be over 60; or (d) be eligible for certain specified disability benefits. A Special Support grant pays £2,906 and is assessed against exactly the same income criteria as the combined Maintenance grants above. The only difference is that the grant entitles students to an increased Maintenance Loan. Any money received through the special support grant will not be counted as income when calculating your entitlement to benifits or tax credits.
