Transport
The University of Kent recognises the importance of reducing single occupancy car use, which will not only assist in alleviating congestion but also help to improve the environment and people's health. As an integral part of building an effective academic institution, the University has developed a Transport Strategy and Travel Plan to work alongside both the local authority and government policies.

Car sharing
Car sharing involves two or more people sharing a car and travelling together. It allows people to benefit from the convenience of a car, while diminishing the associated problems of congestion and pollution.

Buses and trains
Using public transport can help to alleviate congestion and reduce carbon emissions because buses and trains are typically more fuel efficient per passenger mile than cars. They also provide a readily accessible, socially inclusive form of transport.

Cycling
Getting on your bike regularly not only assists with reducing congestion, it can also improve your health and protect you against a wide range of illnesses.

Walking
Walking is free and regular, brisk walking can improve confidence, stamina, energy, weight control and life expectancy. It can also reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, bowel cancer and osteoporosis.

Motorcycling
Using powered two-wheeled vehicles assists with reducing congestion and improves air pollution.

Planning your journey
There are a number of web sites which provide impartial information on planning your journey by foot, bicycle, bus, coach or train.
