Come forth, and bring with you a heart that watches and receives.

Welcome to The Writing Website. This site has been created especially for students in the School of English.
By the time you come to university, you will already be familiar with reading literary texts and writing about them. You may even be wondering why you need to bother reading a website that tells you how to do what you’ve been doing successfully for the past couple of years: reading, writing and discussing literary texts.
Indeed, when you receive your first essay topic list, you may find yourself reading familiar-sounding questions, and at this stage, you may be thinking that studying literature at degree level is simply a case of extending the range of your reading.
To a certain extent this is true: you will be introduced to lots of different and unfamiliar writing. However, this is just part of the story. What’s really new is the way you are going to read and write. As students of literature, you will learn how to read and write critically at university level.
Students taking the Critical Practice Module EN325 will find related information in the Writing Workshop section.
