Degree Structure

The following pages outline the structure of our standard English degree and include areas of departure for Joint Honours, Creative Writing, and Postcolonial Degrees, as well as our Year Abroad Programmes:

Stage 1

All students in Stage 1 may choose from the following modules. Credits may be made up with 'wild' modules from other disciplines. Students must take 120 credits in any given year. Credits must be equally balanced between terms.

EXCEPTIONS:

SINGLE HONOURS

It is possible, with the agreement of the Director of Studies, to substitute 30 Credits (one of your special modules) for a 'wild' module in another discipline.

Joint Honours

Take any ONE core module, plus ONE special module. The remaining 60 credits in your other subject. With the agreement of your other subject, it is possible to substitute 30 credits of English for 30 credits of that subject and vice versa. JH students are not permitted to take a Long Essay special module in English.

Creative Writing students must take at least one of the following

EN600: Reading and Writing Short Fiction

EN549: Reading and Writing Poetry

EN632 Reading and Writing the Innovative Contemporary Novel

PLUS 2 core modules. Remaining credits must be made up from the list of special modules above.
Postcolonial Literature students must take at least two of

EN583: Postcolonial Writing

EN586: Language and Place in Colonial and Postcolonial Poetry

EN623: Native American Cultures : Texts & Contexts

PLUS either

 

EN597: Postcolonial Long Essay OR

EN598: Postcolonial Long Essay

AND either a third special module or a single core modules

Students may also take, instead of one, or two, of the Stage Three modules, one or two relevant modules from other disciplines such as History, Anthropology, or Theology; but you should first consult the advisor for the English, American and Postcolonial Literatures degree.

English Programmes with a Year Abroad

Your third year is spent abroad - your fourth year will correspond to the above information.
