What's so good about English at Kent?

Staff and students in the School of English think that it's a great place to be - but what do external assessors think?

In December 2001 the School was awarded a grade 5 in the Research Assessment exercise. That puts us among a top-ranking group of English departments whose excellence is recognised world-wide.

Research feeds into teaching, but how do we know that we are also good teachers? In a separate exercise, undertaken in March 2001, all of our English programmes were subject to external scrutiny. The reviewers talked to a wide range of staff and students. Here are some extracts from their report:

  • The panel is struck by the widespread evidence, confirmed by the students it met, of the very high level of commitment of staff both to students and to the School's programmes.
  • Staff are accessible to students and responsive to their individual needs.
  • One of the strengths of English taught at Kent is its distinctive offering at all levels of Creative Writing, American Literature and Post-colonial Literatures, a strength which is appreciated by students.
  • The review panel is impressed by the clearly-articulated principles supporting the curriculum and the extent to which the curriculum reflects and embodies these principles.
  • Worthy of particular mention is the element of progression introduced to Part II of the undergraduate degree programme, in which all students study a breadth of literature within second-year core modules in preparation for the final year, where they have greater flexibility to specialise in their own interests.
  • The School employs a commendable variety of forms of assessment, designed to contribute to and test the achievement of intended learning outcomes, and students appreciate this variety.
