Personal Development Planning

For further information on the range of pastoral options open to you, consult the Undergraduate Handbook.

Personal Development Planning (PDP) is a Higher Education initiative available to all our undergraduate students. It provides a structure within which you should raise your awareness of your academic development and monitor this through a process of self-evaluation.

  • Your academic development in this sense involves your progress not only in terms specific to the study of your subject or subjects
  • but in terms of 'key' or general, transferable working skills - e.g. IT, task management, learning strategies, communication, collaboration, presentation etc., consult the section on key skills and PDP in the School of English Undergraduate Handbook (pp. 42-46)
  • This then becomes a central part of your own self-profiling, feeding into your individual academic identity as reflected in your evolving curriculum vitae and how you present yourself to prospective employers.

The School of English, through the Personal Academic Support System, will incorporate your Personal Development Planning in its monitoring of your year-on-year academic progress. For this to happen you need to keep a PDP log and send an end-of-year self-evaluation to the Senior Tutor's secretary (to the School Office or via english-senior-tutor@kent.ac.uk) who will put it in your personal file. You will be reminded about this and given further details of how to do it nearer the time.

This will enhance the School's ability to provide references for you, both for short-term temporary employment and, after graduation, for more permanent career employment.
