Why Study Abroad?
As an English and American Literature student, whether a single honours or joint honours student, it is possible to spend a year studying abroad in one of a number of destinations across Europe and America. There are also a few opportunities to study in Canada and Hong Kong.
For students going abroad in 2014/15 please note that the deadline for submitting your application (including your choices) for the Year Abroad has now past.
The Year Abroad is an attractive proposition for many. It offers the opportunity to experience another way of life - discover people, culture and traditions; to develop new study and life skills; to deepen knowledge of your chosen subject at a new university; to improve existing language skills or develop new ones; and to improve employment prospects whether or not you choose to pursue a career in another European country. Employers recognise such an experience as giving 'added value' to your CV.
Many students say that the Year Abroad is the best year they spend at University. Many will return to their host countries in future years, sometimes even to work or continue their study. As it is a 'productive' gap year, many feel they have more to show and develop more transferable skills than if they had stayed at Kent for the whole of their degree. You don't need to speak another language, although we encourage you to take any opportunity to do so.
