Postgraduate funding 2012/13

The following information relates to postgraduate funding opportunities within the School of English for 2012/13 at both at doctoral and at Masters level. Further information regarding AHRC funding will be updated shortly (expected early Jan 2012).

PhD scholarships


The School of English will offer:

  • Two AHRC PhD scholaships. Further details of these will be announced in the near future.
  • One fully funded PhD scholarship in the form of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) which will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate plus a maintenance grant and a salary element.  The maintenance grant together with the salary will be equivalent to that offered by the Research Councils for 2012 (the rate is currently set at £13,590 for 2011).
  • Two PhD scholarships in the form of a basic Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs). This scholarship represents a fee waiver plus an additional salary of just over £3,000 per year which requires the student to teach in their second and third years of study.
  • Deadline for applications: 29 February 2012.

NB To be eligible for the above Scholarships, candidates must have applied to a School of English PhD programme by 29th February 2012. All candidates who have applied by this date, and who are accepted on to a programme, will automatically be entered in to the Scholarship competition. Candidates who are short-listed for Scholarships will be advised within 4 weeks of the deadline and will be invited to interview.

Additional research scholarships

  • Eight Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Fellowships for TEEME: Text and Event in Early Modern Europe. See www.teemeurope.eu for eligibility criteria and details of the application process. Deadline for applications: 15th December 2011.
    This programme is of particular interest to EU and overseas applicants. 

MA funding opportunities

  • One AHRC scholarship.
  • Six fee-waiver scholarships in 2010/11 which will cover fees at the home/EU rate.
  • Two departmental awards – the Ian Gregor Scholarship, which pays home fees and a £500 bursary for one year’s full-time study, and the Sasha Roberts Scholarship, which is an award of £2,000.
  • One further Scholarship for students studying with the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS). This has a value of £6,000 and is jointly funded by the School of English and the School of History. For further information please click here.

  • Deadline for applications: 29th June 2012 (30th March 2012 for AHRC applications)
  • The MEMS studentship will have an early deadline (likely to be end of January 2012)

Paris Scholarships

Applicants who have been offered a place on any of the Kent at Paris MA programmes may also apply for one of up to 10 Kent at Paris Scholarships, currently valued at £6,000 each. The closing date for applications is 1 June. See the Scholarships pages[1] for further information.
Paris Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding applicants able to demonstrate a high level of academic achievement, clear intellectual ambition and the potential to make a strong contribution to their chosen MA programme.

The application process


All these awards are highly competitive. All applications must be submitted by the deadlines. Applicants accepted onto any of the English MA programmes will be automatically considered for all the available funding. Further details please click here.
