Introduction to Moodle for staff

Moodle is the University of Kent's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Every taught course at the University has its own area on Moodle to provide online materials and support to students.

Moodle Support

If you have any queries on how to use Moodle for your modules, please consult our training materials and documentation which are available online and can be found on the How-to Guides page. If you require further support and advice, please contact your Faculty Learning Technologist (FLT).

Any staff experiencing technical difficulties or login issues with Moodle should contact the IS helpdesk, please refer to http://www.kent.ac.uk/itservices/help/index.html.

Most Moodle administration (e.g. creation of modules and adding staff/students to modules) will be done automatically, for more information see 'Integration with other Kent systems' below.

Within the University of Kent we provide staff training courses on the use of Moodle, as well as documentation for staff unable to attend our training and documentation for students who need help using the system.

Rollover

Rollover is the process of importing content from one Moodle module to another, and can be easily requested by the teacher of a module within Moodle.

During the summer, new blank Moodle modules are created for the new academic year, for all modules. Teachers and convenors correctly defined in the teaching timetable will have access to these from within Moodle. Inside these blank modules there will be a very simple interface provided to staff to pull-in content from any other module they have access to (e.g. the previous year's module).

For instructions on how to use the rollover tool, please see the how-to guides page.

If you can not see your module in Moodle, please ensure that you are correctly identified on the Online Timetable Information System (OTIS), then contact your FLT for help.

Integration with other Kent systems

Moodle uses SDS to handle student enrolments on modules, so it is important that student information in SDS is correct. If students are unable to see Moodle modules that have been made available, please ask them to check their SDS enrolment.

Moodle uses module convenor information from SDS, and teaching schedules in the teaching timetable to handle staff enrolments. It is essential that this too is kept as up to date as possible.

Moodle uses SDS to provide descriptions within Moodle for each module, module titles, and module codes. If any of this information is incorrect within Moodle please do not change it within Moodle. Any changes made within SDS will propogate back into Moodle within 48 hours, and changes preserved for folowing years.

If you have any further enquiries about this, please contact your FLT.
