Migration Information
At the end of June 2009 WebCT is being switched off and will no longer be available. In order to give you continued access to the content from WebCT, we have migrated most (see below for what is not migrated) of the content to Moodle.
These Moodle archives will allow you to access the resources previously available via WebCT. Due to differences between WebCT and Moodle, the layout and presentation of these resources will be different. This will be explained during training, and in addition we have prepared a document explaining the layout in Moodle of migrated content.
Folders from WebCT will be displayed in Moodle sections, sub folders will be displayed in the parent folder's section with appropriate indenting. We hope that when you access these archives that they will be self-explanatory.
Key dates
- 15th/16th April - All WebCT modules from years 2006-2007, 2007-2008, and 2008-2009 will be copied across to Moodle and will be accessible to those staff who could previously see it. Students will not have access until 11th may.
- 11th May - All modules for 2009-2010 will be created and staff will be able to prepare these for the coming academic year. Students will not see these until the staff member(s) running the module(s) decide to allow it.
- 26th May - Students will have access to Moodle to view 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 modules. Student access to 2008-2009 modules can be made available at this time, but if staff plan to continue making resources available to students via a VLE it is vital they ensure that students know if they should be accessing WebCT or Moodle.
- 24th June - A final copying process will be run that will make sure any documents added to WebCT since 15th April are copied into the relevant Moodle module. This process will NOT undo any changes staff may have made to their Moodle modules since 15th April.
- 26th June - WebCT will be switched off at 5pm. There will be no access to WebCT after this date. Anyone who anticipates a need to access Turnitin inboxes after this date needs to talk to their FLT immediately to plan an alternative.
Support Provided
For more information on support, and the School training programme, please see our Moodle Support page.
Turnitin
Although Turnitin will work exactly the same way in Moodle as it does in WebCT, we can not migrate the existing contents of Turnitin inboxes from WebCT. That is: Any previously submitted student assignments, originality reports, or Grademark reports from years 06/07, 07/08, and 08/09. We are arranging for a web-interface which will allow nominated School staff access to these assignments.
Meanwhile, it must be remembered that student assignments submitted in the Summer term 2009, and access to originality reports will not easily be available to staff after 26th June 2009. Therefore we suggest that staff backup any recently submitted work that they anticipate requiring access to. For comprehensive step-by-step instructions, please refer to our video instructions. For more information, please contact your FLT.
What isn't migrated?
For technical and practical reasons, not everything is migrating. The following is a list of WebCT resources that are not migrating:
- Grades in WebCT gradebook - i.e. from quizzes and assignments. For details on exporting this yourself to an excel document, please contact your FLT.
- Turnitin inboxes (see above)
- Announcements
- Calendar items
- Syllabus Tool
Other things to consider
Preparing for re-sits
Please make sure your students understand that the material currently available to them in WebCT will be available during re-sits via Moodle. While students will be hoping not to have to undertake re-sits, please make sure they are prepared by understanding how to use Moodle.
Rollover
In the past rollover has been a long manual task. In future this process will be streamlined with all the power in the hands of staff. On a set date each year (well before the new academic year) new blank modules will be created for all modules. Within these blank modules there will be a very simple interface provided to staff to pull-in content from any other module they have access to (e.g. the previous year's module). For more information please see the Moodle Rollover page.
Integration with other Kent systems
Moodle uses SDS to handle student enrolments on modules, so it is important that student information in SDS is correct. If students are unable to see Moodle modules that have been made available, please ask them to check their SDS enrolment.
Moodle uses module convenor information from SDS, and teaching schedules in the teaching timetable to handle staff enrolments. It is essential that this too is kept as up to date as possible.
Moodle uses SDS to provide descriptions within Moodle for each module, module titles, and module codes. If any of this information is incorrect within Moodle please do not change it within Moodle. Any changes made within SDS will propagate back into Moodle within 24 hours, and changes preserved for folowing years.
