School of Economics

What can I study?

The School of Economics offers a range of undergraduate degree programmes, designed to cater for various interests and career options. Single Honours lead to a BSc award and offer the opportunity to specialise in a different areas; European programmes also lead to a BSc and allow you to study a European language and/or spend a year studying in Europe; and Joint Honours lead to a BA award and enable you to combine the study of economics with another subject on an equal basis.

Degree structure

Undergraduate degrees in the School of Economics (eg BSc, BA) are generally divided into three stages that take three years full-time study, or six years part-time, eg Stage 1 is one year full-time or two years part-time. You must pass each stage in order to progress to the next. Programmes that offer a year in industry or a year studying in Europe require a full year away from the University and take four years full-time study.

Each Stage carries 120 academic credits and you must gain 360 credits for the award of a degree. The year abroad or in industry (Stage A) carries 60 credits, with the full degree requiring 420 credits. Each Stage is generally taught at a higher level than the previous one so that the level of knowledge at Stage 3 is broader and deeper than at Stage 1.

Each Stage is split into modules that carry a credit weighting of 15 or 30 credits. All School of Economics degrees are made up of a combination of compulsory and optional modules, with the ratio depending on your chosen programme, for example, single honours offer a wider choice at Stage 1 but joint honours programmes tend to have a higher number of compulsory modules. Generally, 30-credit modules run all year, while 15-credit modules run in either Autumn or Spring terms.
