The University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent, CT2 7NZ, T +44 (0)1227 764000
The School of Economics offers a strong academic-based student support to all undergraduate students, based on a multi-layered tutorial system to provide support beyond lectures and seminars.
When you arrive at Kent you are assigned a Personal Tutor. You are required to meet with your tutor within the first two weeks of the academic year, when you can discuss general academic issues about studying economics, or ask for more detailed advice about your specific programme.
Your Personal Tutor is also the first person you should contact to discuss any problems you may be having at any point during the academic year.
For each module you are taking, you will have lectures and seminars. Seminar leaders and module convenors have regular consultation hours when you can ask for help or advice on a particular module.
The School of Economics has a Director of Studies for each year. You can consult them about any matters relating to your degree programme. The Directors of Studies are:
The Senior Tutor, Dr Maria Garcia Alonso, provides backup for personal tutors, oversees the student progress monitoring system and the student peer mentors, and is responsible for implementing academic discipline.
The School of Economics has a system of regular monitoring of student progress. The Senior Tutor oversees the system and advises students to see their Personal Tutors, or meet with her, when there is reason for concern. She can provide help and advice when students are having severe problems and may need to take time out from their studies.
The Senior Tutor is also responsible for implementing academic discipline procedures. The University obliges students to attend seminars and lectures and the Senior Tutor oversees the monitoring of attendance.
The School runs a system of student peer mentors, that is, experienced third year students who provide 'freshers' with valuable advice from a student perspective. Mentors are linked to personal tutors so that when you arrive it’s easy to find out who you can contact for advice.
In addition to the academic support available in the School of Economics, the University provides comprehensive support for all other aspects of student life:
In addition, the Faculty of Social Sciences can provide a lot of help and advice about academic systems and procedures.
