Developing conservation planning systems for the Chimanimani, Greater Limpopo and Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Areas
Principal Investigator - Professor Nigel Leader-Williams Project Officer - Dr Bob Smith Project Dates - 2007/10 Funding Body - Global Environment Facility Introduction Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) are relatively large areas that cross political boundaries between two or more countries, and cover large-scale natural ecosystems that include one or more PA. They act as vehicles for the conservation and sustainable use of biological and cultural resources, whilst promoting regional peace, co-operation and socio-economic development. As part of this, they encourage the involvement of the private sector and local communities in developing new conservation initiatives. The Government of Mozambique recognise the potential of TFCAs and has established a number of initiatives with their partners in Tanzania, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Three of these TFCAs focus on the Chimanimani, Greater Limpopo and Lubombo regions, where funding is focused on developing infrastructure and building capacity. This project is developing conservation planning systems to help guide these activities and is a collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism's TFCA unit and Dr Cornelio Ntumi from Universidade Eduardo Mondlane.
