DICE offers six interconnected taught Masters courses as well as research degrees
MSc in Conservation and Biodiversity Law
The MSc in Conservation and Biodiversity Law is an interdisciplinary programme that focuses on the principles and instruments that underpin biodiversity policy and law at an international level. The programme is designed for biodiversity policy makers and administrators with experience in international conservation work, and those who wish to strengthen their training in the legal regulation of biodiversity management. The programme is delivered in conjunction with the Kent Law School who offer a number of elective modules in environmental law.
MSc in Conservation Biology
This highly successful postgraduate degree by coursework and dissertation has been the core activity of DICE since 1991. This interdisciplinary and international programme attracts students from all over the world, most of which go on to forge flourishing careers in conservation research or practice.
MSc in Conservation and Business
Successful biodiversity conservation relies on an understanding of business principles, practices and tools. In this MSc programme, students will be introduced to key business concepts and practices such as customer behaviour, market competition and financial performance and how they relate to biodiversity conservation. We will also explore the potential role and contribution of commercial firms and not ‘for–profit’ business models to preserving biodiversity.
MSc in Conservation and International Wildlife Trade
This degree by coursework and dissertation started in September 2006 and builds on DICE success in bringing an interdisciplinary approach to conservation study and research. International trade and use are important drivers of rural and urban economies, but impact around one third of all threatened birds and mammals. The course aims to encourage an integrated approach to international wildlife trade regulation and local conservation.
MSc in Conservation and Plant Science
Global biodiversity is under significant pressure, none more so than plants, with 27-33% thought to be threatened with extinction. As primary producers much of the Earth's biodiversity is total dependent on plants which account for >99.9% of living biomass. This programme provides students with a knowledge base and the practical experience to address issues relating to plant biodiversity conservation and management, and includes a one-week residential module at the world famous Millennium Seed Bank.
MSc in Conservation and Primate Behaviour
At its core, the MSc in Primate Conservation and Behaviour will provide you with a forum for understanding the behaviour of non-human primates and the current issues and hot topics in of non-human primate conservation and management. This program offers collaborations with international NGOs around the world from the neotropics to Africa and South-East Asia, with zoological institutions across Europe (e.g. Howletts and Port Lympne Animal Parks, Kent) and primate sanctuaries across Africa.
MSc in Conservation Project Management
The management of species, habitats and ecosystems is increasingly drawing upon principles and practices from other disciplines, such as business, marketing and human resources. This new MSc programme draws upon the extensive conservation project management experience of Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, and aims to equip practitioners with the skills and tools they need to manage conservation projects effectively. The programme is suitable for managers of conservation projects that wish to build on their existing skills, or conservation practitioners who wish to move into a project management role.
MSc in Conservation and Rural Development
This is an interdisciplinary degree programme by coursework and dissertation that started in September 2010. It aims to fill a growing demand for professionals who are qualified to work at the interface between conservation and rural development. It builds on DICE's prestigious suite of existing international Masters programmes, and also calls upon wider expertise within the School of Anthropology and Conservation of which DICE is a part.
MSc in Conservation and Tourism
This degree by coursework and dissertation was first offered in 1998, and explores the current debate about ecotourism to natural sites and protected areas. The programme was initiated because we recognised that nature tourism is the fastest growing sector of the world’s largest industry, yet no other postgraduate programme in UK specifically addressed concerns that arise from the growth in nature tourism.
Research degrees in Biodiversity Management
All degrees undertaken in DICE by research and thesis, whether MSc, MPhil or PhD, are unified under the title of Biodiversity Management. DICE has so far graduated over 50 research students. A thriving and lively community of research students continue to explore a wide range of important topics in conservation science from an interdisciplinary perspective, and undertake fieldwork both in developed countries and in biodiversity-rich developing countries.
