Durrell Endangered Species Management Graduate Certificate (DESMAN - GCert)
This internationally recognised course is validated by the University of Kent, but run by the International Training Centre of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in Jersey, to whom interested applicants should apply. This course first ran in 1985 and focuses on professionals at middle and top management levels working in zoos and breeding centres or field based conservation organisations in species-rich, but resource-poor, countries. The aim of the course is to fuse current thinking in species conservation with the practice of managing endangered species and the systems on which they depend thereby giving participants the chance to become more effective conservation professionals. Several graduates have furthered their education in DICE by going on to join MSc programmes.
Island Species-Led Action (ISLA): A two-week long course run by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, ISLA is designed for conservation practitioners and students working to conserve island species from extinction. Dr Jim Groombridge teached Conservation Genetics on these courses which are tailored to the needs of the host country. The course covers topics such as the application of small population biology to species conservation and how we should be controlling, eradicating or managing the spread of introduced invasive species. ISLA has been run in the Caribbean and Indian Ocean and is currently completing a three year programme in the Pacific. Previous courses have been run in Jersey (2004), St.
Lucia (2005), Galapagos (2006), Mauritius (2007), Guam (2008).The destination for 2009 is the island of Fiji.
Diploma in Conservation Education
The Diploma was validated by DICE for 8 years, from 2001 to 2009, but is now run entirely by RARE, whom interested applicants should contact. This Diploma offers conservation professionals without formal educational qualifications the chance to train in ecology, conservation education, and social marketing at DICE, as a basis for implementing a conservation education campaign in each student’s home country over the course of a 1 year programme. |
