Key facts

Outline

The Centre offers excellent opportunities for full or part-time research in migration studies leading to higher degrees. Recent projects have included: oral history research with Ethiopian refugee communities; a comparison of the experiences of social care workers working with asylum seekers in Australia and the UK; research into services for victims of sex trafficking in Turkey; social networks of asylum seekers; migrant mineworkers in South Africa; Somali communities in Minneapolis and London; unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people in Kent; and the role of diversity officers in European cities

In addition to regular individual supervision, research students registered in Canterbury may opt to take modules from the MA in Methods of Social Research and other modules from the School's taught Master's programmes. Research students in Brussels are encouraged to attend the MA Methodology module taught in Brussels. They are also encouraged to take part in departmental research seminars, and students in Brussels are required to participate in the weekly interdisciplinary PhD Research Seminar.

Funding

Every school at Kent offers one or two University postgraduate research scholarships, each available for three years, providing fees at the home/EU rate and a stipend up to £13,590 per annum (2011/12 rate).

Many schools offer scholarships in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) whereby postgraduate research students receive financial support in return for teaching. The value of awards may vary, but often cover tuition fees at the home/EU rate and a substantial maintenance grant.

All postgraduate research students are eligible to apply for GTAs. See Graduate Teaching Assistantships.

The School has had sustained success in attracting ESRC studentship funding and we actively support suitable candidates who are applying for the ESRC competition with research interests related to migration studies.

For further details of postgraduate funding, see Postgraduate funding.

Migration and Social Care

The Centre has established a multidisciplinary research group on migration and social care. The work has national and international dimensions. In the past, members of the group have carried out research on the human rights implications of polices relating to refugees and asylum seekers; cross-border marriage migration; the health and social care needs of immigration detainees; and the experiences of interpreters working in health and social care services. They have also undertaken European Erasmus-funded work developing a curriculum on the health and social care of migrants to be used in universities across Europe; contributed to the EU-funded COST Action on Health and Social Care for Migrants and Ethnic Minorities in Europe, a knowledge transfer hub for the development of good practice in asylum reception in Europe; undertaken a tracking exercise exploring the interface between refugees and social care agencies; and contributed to a European Commission-funded study of the mental health and social care of refugees in four EC countries. The research group has close links with leading NGOs and intergovernmental organisations in the refugee field and excellent links with partner institutions in Europe, Canada, the US and Australia.
