National ratings

Research Assessment Exercise 2008: social work, social policy and administration ranked 4th nationally for research quality, with 70% of the research rated “world-leading” or “internationally excellent”.

Taught programmes

Migration studies are offered by the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR) and the School of Politics and International Relations. Our programmes have a dual focus: broadly defined migration studies, complemented by a unique focus on migration, health and social care. We have been highly successful in attracting students already working in services for migrant and minority ethnic groups, and our teaching and research combines our academic and theoretical strengths with a practical component. We have excellent international and European links, and students can choose to study in Brussels or on the Canterbury campus.

Migration studies in Kent has an established international reputation and has developed research partnerships with universities and service providers across Europe in order to:

  • develop a range of teaching programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to improve the knowledge and skills of students and professionals working with migrants and refugees
  • provide forums for exchanging knowledge in this field
  • undertake research on the impact of social care, health and mental health policies and practices on migrants and refugees
  • identify examples of good practice in the health and social care of migrants and refugees, and assess the potential for disseminating good practice.

An international profile

The Centre has a national and international reputation for its work in the field of migration, and has provided expertise to key service providers including the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, the International Organisation for Migration, British Refugee Council, Kent County Council, the European Commission, the UK Home Office, the UK Department of Health, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. In our research and consultancy, we draw on links with health and social care institutions and academic establishments in the UK, Germany, Greece, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Hungary, Belgium, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, North America and Taiwan.

Dynamic Publishing Culture

In the past few years, migration studies staff and students have contributed to journals including: Journal of Public Mental Health; The Oral History Review; Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies; Journal of Refugee Studies; Transcultural Psychiatry; Social Science and Medicine; chapters in numerous edited volumes.

The International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care is edited by SSPSSR. It is a multidisciplinary journal focusing on international migration, and includes items on labour migration, asylum seekers, refugees and undocumented migrants, with an emphasis on health, social care and mental health issues.
