International Economic Law LLM

This is a taught programme within the Law subject area.

Outline

This programme gives you the opportunity to look at some of the most pertinent and engaging questions raised by the recent turmoil in the international economy – the relationships between states and markets, political authority and economic rationality, and the relevance of concepts of social justice and global distribution of wealth in the international regulation of economic processes.

The LLM in International Economic Law addresses these and other issues in close conjunction with the MA programmes in International Political Economy andInternationalDevelopment(also offered at the University of Kent's Brussels centre), offering a uniquely integrated critical and interdisciplinary approach to the study of economic governance and the legal institutionalisation of global capitalism. Open to students with first degrees in law and cognate subjects, this LLM programme enables students to acquire the skills and knowledge appropriate for careers in public and private organisations concerned with international development, trade, investment and finance.

Programme structure

The Master's degrees offered within the Law School are taught by seminar and dissertation.

You take three modules in each of the first two terms. These are normally assessed by a single essay of 4-5,000 words for each module, but some modules make special arrangements for assessment, for example, by requiring two essays of 2-2,500 words, or by awarding up to 20% of the marks according to the quality of student participation.

In the third term and during the summer period, you write a 15-20,000 word dissertation, under the supervision of a member of academic staff. This should be on a specific topic within the field of the degree.

For all of the Law taught Master's degrees, there is the alternative of studying for a postgraduate diploma. Students registered for the diploma take the same modules as a Master's student, but do not write a dissertation.
